Following more than six weeks, the lengthiest federal government closure in history has concluded.

Government employees will start receiving pay anew. Public lands will resume operations. Public services that had been limited or suspended entirely will restart. Flight operations, which had become extremely difficult for countless travelers, will revert to being merely frustrating.

What Has Been Accomplished?

When everything stabilizes and the signature from the President's endorsement on the budget measure sets, what has this record-setting shutdown accomplished? And what price was paid?

Senate Democrats, through their use of the legislative delaying tactic, were able to trigger the shutdown despite being a minority in the chamber by refusing to go along with a Republican measure to provide short-term financing for the government.

The Minority Position

They created a line in the sand, requiring that the GOP members consent to continue medical coverage assistance for financially struggling individuals that are due to terminate at the end of the year.

After several opposition legislators defected from the party to vote to reopen the government on recently, they gained very little in return – a promise of a vote in the Senate on the support payments, but no assurances of Republican support or even required approval in the lower chamber.

While his poll numbers have dropped over the past month, there exists a year before GOP members have to encounter the electorate in the congressional elections. And, barring some kind of basic governmental alteration, Trump can avoid anxiety regarding standing for election again.

Legislative Future Actions

Following the conclusion of the shutdown, the legislative branch will resume its normal legislative activities. Despite the legislative body has largely been inactive for several weeks, GOP members still expect they will pass some substantive legislation before next year's election cycle begins.

Despite multiple federal agencies will be funded until September in the closure resolution, the legislature will have to approve spending for other governmental functions by the conclusion of next month to avert further stoppage.

Ongoing Challenges

The opposition party, recovering from defeat, could be desiring another chance to fight.
