Fans of this game's highly fluid movement can rejoice to discover that an innovative traversal feature will be introduced when Season 27: Amped goes live on Nov. 4. Unveiling Mantle Boosting Named "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this feature provides gamers a burst of propulsion when climbing over obstacles. As explained lead battle royale designer the design lead, Mantle Boosting was previously been a feature of the game for quite a while, often called as "ledge boosting." However it's challenging for the average player, and is mainly used by competitive players in Ranked Mode or esports competitions. This season, Respawn is making it easier for everyone to execute these tricky speed-boosts. "This technique existed in Apex for a while, but executing it requires skill to perform and a player might not realize it [is in the game] without outside knowledge," the designer states. "Now including a visual cue so users can clearly identify when and how to activate the fast-paced movement ability, making accessible the mechanic and introducing new ways to compete for a much wider base." The Reasoning Behind Make It Accessible Why make a once niche technique accessible to everyone? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan says the team wants players to experience empowerment — even those who are new. "Our community is doing advanced techniques like super-gliding and tap-strafing, and we examined at other games, looked at what our players execute, and we wondered, 'What if we provide some of this power to more players?'" Mohan clarifies. "Since currently, certain advanced [movement] mechanics are kind of janky to use — you need to change controls and execute within precise timings. We proposed, 'How about we make a more official implementation?'" The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility Mobility is primarily the name of the game in Season 27, with characters Horizon, the defensive specialist, and the aerial combatant receiving buffs to maintain them in motion. Recovery time on her tactical ability is shorter, and the Gravity Lift will propel users into the air much quicker than it used to. Rampart's Amped Cover feature a roof and the ability to provide movement bonuses to those nearby. However it's the high-flying this Legend receiving significant improvements this season, with various adjustments implemented to make her stronger, faster, and deadlier. "I think many agree that her moment is here," says Legend designer the designer. "There's no doubt that she's been top-tier in the past, but due to the addition of new Legends, mobility perks, and redeployment tools, it felt like she fell behind in today's Apex. This presented a really great opportunity for us to reexamine multiple elements [of her kit] and essentially bring her back to her glory days." Enhancements to the Aerial Legend To restore her competitive status in current strategies, Holstead says the team assessed each of her abilities and introduced some powerful modifications. Her jetpack have been upgraded, boosting her speed during flight, and the jets themselves now recharge three times faster, allowing her to spend more time in the air. She can no longer be harmed from her ultimate ability, which has also been upgraded to mark enemies who take damage from it. Her squad redeploy skill — which lifts teammates into the air for redeployment or escape — now takes much less time to fire up. Additionally, she gains recently added perk choices that users can select to conserve resources, widen the area of her rockets, or accelerate her Skyward Dive activation. "Her jet pack fulfills that jet-fighter fantasy," Holstead comments. Olympus Improvements Additionally, the lone airborne map, Olympus, is getting a mobility-focused facelift, with major changes that expands bottlenecks and makes securing elevated positions more manageable. Respawn says Apex Legends Season 27 is all about giving players the tools required to keep up with the competition. "Really, we examined the game's core identity as a fast-paced FPS," says principal designer Josh Mohan. Apex Legends Season 27: Amped releases Nov. 4 at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
