‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s path from rehabilitation to goals with Athletic Bilbao

Thehe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta played in the UK, an 18-year-old appearing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in September 2015, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he appeared in British turf, against Sunderland two months later, he netted. The third time, against Pep Guardiola’s team not long later, sure enough, he did it once more. When he returned to Manchester to play against the Red Devils at Leigh Sports Village in 2017, he did it once more. An excellent finish, too. “In fact,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” Thus the club did what they had to do: they took him off.

“I got well angry,” the forward reveals, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: I was without a signed deal, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about Manchester United, standard transfer gossip. I have no idea how true it was, but supposing an offer came, I’d have chosen to stay at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”

At the training ground, the Basque Country, the morning session is set to begin; post-session, the short journey to Loiu and another trip to the UK, this time to play Newcastle in the UCL on midweek. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for Athletic, partly because of the demands of competing at this level. Beaten in added time in the local rivalry, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and Dortmund in Europe. But, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and those that lie ahead, and a sense of thankful reflection about him.

In the three years since he had come back to Athletic, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge up the Nervión estuary flanked by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. Currently he stands as Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are distinctive and debuting in a long period. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.

Guruzeta thought it challenging enough just to make the first team and his assessment was correct. Born to the ex-La Real star the former professional and a dedicated fan at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that produced the coach, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He signed for Athletic at 17 but after his top-level debut in that summer, he suffered a serious knee problem, dropped, a drop in category and a call back before he could earn his place, coming back aged 26 to experience the peak of their lives.

“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the top level but every phase you advance through you’re still there and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He featured briefly in six matches in half a dozen appearances between his bow and that period. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games at that level and I tear my cruciate.

“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as something positive because it made me change the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You adopt practices you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I did the sessions and then head home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Practice, prevention. Strength training. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. With decent ankle function, improve it more. All the minor details: do them.

“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles countless occasions. Extremely powerful. I look at photos of me before: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Present-day images and the change is dramatic. The setback taught me. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Everyone else is ready, really ready; you have to be too.”

Game time is essential. The striker moved in tears in that year, aged 23, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. Should you reverse it, effort, faith, and should the time come a vacancy arises for your role, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, compete continentally, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. All the more so after the prior campaign which, at times, was focused on persistence. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
